Re:Nylon

It has always been a key material for Prada. The brand's '84 debut of Pocone nylon in its bags and accessory line earned it worldwide acclaim, while Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her own label as well as Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, hypebeast-ready line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The Milan-based powerhouse has changed its iconic nylon bags into sustainable reNylon fabrics. The new collection comes with six classic styles including bags for belts, shoulder bag, tote bag, duffle bag and two backpacks made from repurposed ECONYL fabric made from recycled fishing nets, plastics and textile fiber wastes sourced all over the world.

The repurposed fabric is a result of a collaboration with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn producer that produces Econyl fabric using regenerated nylon waste, which can be recycled over and over again without losing its quality. It's part a larger initiative to shift from virgin nylon to re:Nylon across the entire Prada portfolio in 2021, The Business of Fashion reports. In addition to the six new Re:Nylon bags, the range also includes a pair boots and shoes constructed from repurposed ECONYL, as well as various apparel items made of the same fabric.

Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", the video series that showcases the innovative method used to create Re:Nylon bags. The first video is a collaboration between Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, as well as National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling facility in Arizona that converts old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.

With the shift to re:Nylon, Prada is making its biggest reduction in the use of virgin nylon to date, resulting in the reduction of the company 70,000 barrels of oil each year, The Business of Fashion reports. This move will also lower the carbon emissions of the company by about 57,000 tonnes. It's the latest sustainability effort from the label which recently made it fur-free on its clothing and accessories, a move which was lauded by environmentalists and animal rights activists alike.

Recycled nylon

While it is more beneficial for the environment than nylon, recycled nylon still has its own drawbacks. It isn't biodegradable and will sit in landfills or oceans for a long time until it is broken down into smaller pieces which can harm wildlife. The fabric is also non-breathable and can shed microplastics when washed. However, it uses 50 percent less energy to make as compared to regular nylon and is more durable than other bags like cotton or wool.

The fabric is an amalgamation of waste petroleum and plastics, that is made from fossil fuels. This helps reduce the need for more natural resources, and also the carbon emissions resulting from the production of nylon that is virgin. It is also less difficult than other bags to handle because it doesn't have to be dyed or woven. This makes it an ideal option for bags that are going to be used frequently like gym and yoga equipment.

Recycled nylon is stronger and more flexible than polyester or cotton that are both traditional fabrics. It's also able to endure many abuses, which makes it perfect for backpacks and other outdoor gear.  prada gold handbag  is also incredibly lightweight and is easily shaped and stitched to create the desired shape of bags. Nylon is also a good choice for outdoor gear as it is waterproof, and it doesn't absorb mildew or odors as readily as other fabrics.

When selecting a bag that is sustainable, look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certification. This certification test chemical residues as well as social and environmental responsibility. This certification is an excellent indication of brands that are honest and responsible.

Patagonia offers, for example, a range backpacks and yoga equipment made of recycled nylon, which is known as Econyl. This nylon is created in a closed-loop process which requires 50% less energy than regular virgin nylon. The brand also supports organizations which work to protect our planet.
